Capital District Writing Project - Young Writers Workshops

BEYOND WORDS: DISCOVERING THE MANY WAYS TO TELL A STORY (Rising 1st-4th Graders)
Ignite your imagination and join us for a storytelling adventure! Stories can take many forms, and there is not a single way to write or create one. Together, we'll explore the diverse ways stories can be shared—through wordless tales, comics, real-life accounts, fantastical journeys, and beautiful picture books. This week, writers will go on a journey to find stories within themselves and in the world around them.
A CALL TO ADVENTURE: WRITING HEROES AND THEIR JOURNEYS (Rising 5th-7th Graders)
What makes a hero? Explore heroes from myths to modern legends, or through your own memory or imagination. Students will develop their own heroes, design epic journeys, and learn the basics of storytelling and character development in this fun, interactive writing adventure.
FROM MEMORY TO MASTERPIECE (Rising 8th-10th Graders)
This class is designed to help you craft a meaningful personal narrative about your individual experiences that would rival any fictional story. We will do this by collecting memories, crafting scenes, and bringing your unique point of view to life within a vibrant community of young writers. You can make your personality, your past, your aspirations come to life on the page through descriptive language, suspenseful dialogue, and models from other writers who have shown the world their true selves. This writing has the potential to become a powerful college essay.
DISCOVERING YOUR VOICE (Rising 10th-12th graders)
Find your voice and your community this summer! In this creative writing workshop, rising 10-12th graders will join a unique community of writers on the UAlbany campus. Young writers will visit multiple spaces on campus for inspiration as they explore multiple genres of writing. On each day of the workshop, acclaimed professional authors affiliated with the New York State Writers Institute will visit to give readings and engage in craft discussions. Gifted facilitators from the Capital District Writing Project will lead carefully designed writing exercises and provide prompts to help young writers find their voice and go on a journey of creative discovery. After a week of writing and individualized feedback, young writers will share their writing in a culminating celebratory showcase and contribute to an online space highlighting the work of workshop participants past and present. This workshop is for highly motivated and creative high school students who are eager to develop their craft and to find their voice in a supportive writing community.
