Historic Palmyra, 5 Museums-1 Destination
Historic Palmyra has more than 200 years of American history in Palmyra at our Historical Museum which showcases 23 themed rooms of memories and memorabilia. The Erie Canal Depot located in an 1840's tenant house, features much of its original architecture. See the stalls that housed mules in the basement as the canal workers brought them up to rest from a hard days work on the trail. Step into our next museum, The Palmyra Print Shop. In 1856, John M. Jones settled in Palmyra, changing the future of the printing industry. In the museum, "where time stands still" The William Phelps museum has served the needs of the community since 1868,until the closing of the store in 1940. Above the store is the family residence where Sibyl Phelps lived for 81 years until 1976. Never updated to have running water or electricity, this home holds the Phelps 108 year legacy to this day. On William St. we have our Alling Coverlet museum. This museum holds the largest collection of American hand woven coverlets in the country. The extensive collection spans from 1780-1873 and includes our own local weavers James Van Ness and Ira Hadsell's coverlets and an extensive collection of quilts that continues to grow.
