The NYS Museum serves the lifelong educational needs of New Yorkers and visitors through its collections, exhibitions, programs, and publications in science, history, anthropology, art.

The New York State Museum welcomes you back with new protocols to keep you healthy and safe in 2022! Visitors will notice that some galleries and exhibit features are closed and we have new safety rules in place. Please review the information provided below to ensure a safe return to the Museum for everyone.

Effective February 11, 2022, the COVID policy for visitors to the New York State Museum will be lifted.
Masks are not required but are highly recommended for visitors and non-staff.
Visitors and non-staff will no longer be required to show proof of COVID vaccination or proof of a negative COVID test within the previous 48 hours.
Please be reminded that simple steps can help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, including to: 
  • Wear a mask that fits securely over the nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. 

The New York State Museum, located in the capital city of Albany, New York, is a major research and educational institution that, by law, conducts systematic investigations into the geology, biology, anthropology and history of New York. It is mandated to disseminate the results of this work through its educational and advisory services to benefit the economy, environment, health and education of the people of the State. The Museum hosts more than 750,000 visitors each year, making it one of the largest cultural attractions in the state.
