SENSORY-FRIENDLY PLAY TIME | Kids Out and About Albany

SENSORY-FRIENDLY PLAY TIME

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 04/10/2016
In order to make the play space more sensory friendly, the Museum staff will dim lights, turn off music, remove batteries from clocks and remove loud devices from select areas. Each play time will feature a special program or community expert designed to offer children and families additional information.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

January Slater, Creative Director at Creative Kidz Cafe, will present a yoga class for sensory-sensitive children at 11 a.m. during the January 10 play time.

"Yoga does not only strengthen the body, release blocked energy, and improve coordination, but it also facilitates sensory integration and teaches body awareness – something all children need in order to fully appreciate their bodies and attain the pure depths of self-love," said Slater. "By becoming more aware of their bodies, our children can learn to feel more comfortable in their own skin throughout their lives."

Families who need a break or a quiet space will be able to rest in the newly designed quiet area. In addition, during these sensory-friendly times, families who find the experience too overwhelming within the first 20 minutes of admission may request free return passes for a later date.

“We understand that new experiences may be challenging, and some families may be hesitant to attend. Sensory-sensitive children, like all children, sometimes have a bad day and may need a chance to try again another time,” said Hickland.

Several changes have recently been made to the Museum’s galleries as part of the new experience project, Spectral Beauty. This exhibition includes muted paint colors, sound control, new tactile materials for the Museum’s art room, and a change to the World Music Center and Count Me In gallery activities. Specially selected art pieces from children living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder are also on display.
