Take a guided walking tour through Schenectady’s historic Stockade District before exploring primary source documents from the Schenectady County Historical Society’s collection to gain a better understanding of what life was like for a new resident.

In the first half of the 20th Century, 1.6 million African-Americans moved from the South up to cities like Schenectady in search of a better life. Take a guided walking tour through Schenectady’s historic Stockade District before exploring primary source documents from the Schenectady County Historical Society’s collection to gain a better understanding of what life was like for a new resident of Schenectady. 


Schenectady County Historical Society's family programs are open to students 2nd grade and up. Parents or chaperones are asked to stay with their student through the duration of the program.
