On Thursday February 20, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Crailo State Historic Site will host a Family Magic Lantern Program, an interactive program for people of all ages to learn and experience the history of the magic lantern, “the grandfather of cinema." During the 1600s, the Dutch scientist and inventor Christiaan Huyghens created the first magic lantern, and it was used by magicians and showmen for generations.  On February 20, visitors to Crailo will get to experience a historically recreated magic lantern performance presented by Elliott & Schlemowitz Magic Lanternists.  Doors open at noon, and the first Magic Lantern demonstration using antique projection equipment will begin at 12:30 PM.  A second magic lantern performance will take place at 2:30 PM.  Additionally, intermittent short presentations of magic lantern history and demonstrations take place throughout the afternoon.  Other hands on activities include making your own magic lantern slides, playing with the toy magic lantern, and using a variety of noise makers to accompany the slides.

During the program, guests will enjoy a museum open house and refreshments by the fire in Crailo’s hearth kitchen. The Marketplace Museum Shop will be open, with a selection of unique items. Admission is $3.00 per person, 12 & Under are free of charge.
