Adler & Bernstein Birthday Bash

The Empire State Youth Orchestra, led by Music Director Helen Cha-Pyo, salutes Samuel Adler and Leonard Bernstein! ESYO will pay tribute to two of America’s revered composers and conductors, celebrating Samuel Adler at 90 and Leonard Bernstein at 100. For his 100th birthday year, ESYO will raise a toast to Bernstein’s centennial with a rendition of one of his great early successes, music to the ballet “Fancy Free,” and the brilliant Overture to Candide. In honor of Samuel Adler’s 90th birthday, ESYO Youth Orchestra will perform Adler’s “A Bridge to Understanding.” The ESYO-commissioned piece premiered 10 years ago at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall for the New Music for a New Generation Festival. It was later presented for the European premieres during ESYO’s 2008 tour in Austria, Germany, and Czech Republic. The Birthday Bash will pay tribute to Adler with the world premiere of “A Birthday Celebration!” written exclusively by Bruce Roter in celebration of Adler’s 90th milestone. ESYO CHIME’s String Ensemble will join ESYO Youth Orchestra for a special side by side performance of Adler’s “Concertino for Strings.”
