Building something real with your own hands is a great feeling, and this class gives students ages 12 to 14 a chance to do just that. Over three Thursday evenings, each student will build a Shaker-style wall shelf to take home and actually use.
Instructor Preston Sweeney will walk students through each step of the project: measuring and marking, cutting, drilling, sanding, and assembly. They'll learn how to use tools safely and correctly, and they'll get a taste of traditional Shaker design, which is all about simple, well-made pieces.
No woodworking experience is needed. First-timers are welcome, and so are kids who've built a few things and want to learn more. We provide all the tools, materials, and safety gear. Students just need closed-toe shoes and a water bottle.
About the Instructor
Preston Sweeney teaches engineering and technical trades at Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs. He's a lifelong woodworker who also collects vintage tools, and he loves helping kids find out what they're capable of in the shop.
