Cost of Camp: $930 Residential; $775 Commuters. $100 deposit required. Registration opens February 1, 2020.

We will be using CampDoc for our online registration system. We are again partnering with CampDoc (an online registration program) to better serve our campers and staff. CampDoc offers online registration and an electronic health record system for campers. The CampDoc site is secure, encrypted and password protected. Only Alfred University Summer Health Staff will have access to camper health information.

The Program:

This a week-long overnight camp for students entering grades 9-12 who are interested in research; whether it’s scientific or other. While in camp, we will be discussing responsible conduct in research. We will cover the various forms of scientific misconduct, questionable research practices and various types of risky research such as artificial intelligence, genetics research, weapons research and more. The camp will heavily rely on discussion and will employ both real life and hypothetical cases of misconduct, proper conduct, and questionable conduct. We will also discuss scientific and research literacy and their importance along with the importance of communicating science to non-scientists.

When not in class, campers enjoy planned activities on campus as well as free time for relaxation. Living, dining and learning together provides campers ample opportunity to get to know each other and develop lasting friendships.

The Faculty:
This camp is directed and taught by Alfred University’s Chemistry professor, Dr. John D’Angelo. Dr. D’Angelo earned his BS in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2000. He then earned his PhD from the University of Connecticut in 2005 working in the laboratories of Michael B. Smith. After completing his PhD, He took a position as a postdoctoral research associate at The Johns Hopkins University. In 2007, Dr. D’Angelo accepted a position at Alfred University at the rank of Assistant Professor. In 2013, he was awarded tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor at Alfred. He served as the local ACS section (Corning) chair in 2014, will serve as Chair again in 2021 and served as the Faculty Senate president from May 2014-May 2018.

Activities:
When not in classes, campers have lots of fun participating in a variety of recreational activities. Planned activities include indoor and outdoor games, hikes and movies, possible planned trips to the Equestrian Center, Foster Lake, and social gatherings at a local coffee house. There is also a farewell party on the last night of camp. Admissions interviews and campus tours will be available by appointment on Thursday afternoon. Living, dining and learning together, campers have a great opportunity to get to know each other and develop lasting friendships. The emphasis is on having fun and enjoying our beautiful natural surroundings while learning!

Schedule:
Campers must arrive between 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Sunday for registration and will leave after lunch on Thursday. During the week they will attend classes during the day and have fun participating in planned recreational activities on and off campus in the evening. Further information, including a detailed program schedule and driving directions to campus will be sent to all students upon acceptance.

Tuition, Room and Board:
Cost of Camp: $930.00 ($100 DEPOSIT DUE AT TIME OF REGISTRATION)
This covers tuition, supervision, program materials, recreational activities, housing and meals. Students stay in the University’s residence halls dedicated to summer campers. Campers are required to provide their own pillows, blankets and bed linens (to fit an extra-long twin mattress). Should the camper need, linens can be provided for an additional cost and you MUST let us know by June 1, 2020, for arrangements. Cafeteria-style meals are served in the University dining hall.

Commuter Rate for Local Students - $775.00
This covers tuition, daytime classes, program materials and lunch only. Commuting students mush check-in at registration on Sunday and must arrive on campus by 8:45 AM for classes Monday through Thursday. They must be picked up by 5 PM each day with the exception of Thursday when pick-up time is 1 PM (after lunch).

Financial Aid:
Unfortunately there is no financial aid available for our summer program.

• $100 deposit (paid on online application form) - Due May 1.
• A one-page essay telling us why you would like to attend (in your own words and signed)

A deposit of $100 is required at the time of applying. Applications will not be considered if the deposit is not paid by the May 1 deadline. The remaining balance is due by June 1. Late applications will only be considered if space is available.
