Have you ever wondered about wetlands?  Find out about them at Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center on August 13th as Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Hudson River Estuary Program invite community volunteers, local leaders, planners, and the public to celebrate one of the Hudson Valley’s greatest assets: wetlands!  This free program will explore the diverse wetlands of the Hudson Valley, their economic and environmental values, and why it makes good sense to conserve them for future generations.

The event will feature a presentation by Laura Heady of the Hudson River Estuary Program on wetland conservation, then we will watch Liquidity a short documentary film by Hudson Valley native Jeanne Vitale exploring the values of wetlands.  To complete our night, we will take a relaxing walk along the 1.5 miles of nature trails at Mud Creek which provide the perfect setting to see the frogs, birds, cattails, and many other interesting plants and animals that call our wetlands home.   Pamela Price, Certified Wildlife Biologist and Education Program Coordinator at Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center and Laura Heady of the Estuary Program will discuss the vital role wetlands play in clean water, biodiversity, flood mitigation and climate change as well as answers any questions along the way as we explore our wetland connections.  Please dress for the weather and wear shoes that can get wet.

Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District (www.ccswcd.org) provides educational programs and services to help residents and communities manage and protect the natural resources of Columbia County.  The district office offers technical assistance related to the conservation and proper management of soil and water resources as well as outdoor education and recreational opportunities through the Mud Creek Environmental Learning Center facility and programs.
