Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 04/12/2019
The always versatile resident company of The Egg – the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company – performs From the mind/of a single, long vine/one hundred opening lives Framing a primitive distant world, this powerful work by Ellen Sinopoli enters an ancient dimension where every experience is steeped in ritual. The dance unearths and delves into the legends, secrets and anecdotes emanating from the African-influenced designs of Jim Lewis’ carved “sitting pieces”. Each has the capacity to shape shift. A scoop becomes a calabash, canoe, cradle, weapon. A backrest becomes a shield, mask, animal spirit. A dismantled throne becomes a coffin and, in the end, the means to heal. Sinopoli puts forth these questions – “Can these carved pieces, strewn across the space, act as a kind of journal? What stories, both private and universal, will emanate from them?” The African and African-influenced percussion and vocals of artists like Aisha Kahlil, Ali Jihad Racy, Rokia Traore and Foday Musa Suso act as vibrant threads into the shifting narrative. The costumes by Kim Vanyo capture the colors, textures and mysteries of this ancient and yet uniquely current world. Together the timeless universal stories of all communities of people – birth, childhood, death, conflict, marriage, traditions, leadership and healing – are revealed.

Contrapuntal Fling: Bernstein’s “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs” drives this energetic piece as the dancers scat, syncopate, shadow and swing to a truly extraordinary array of sound. This piece was an ESDC commission from the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra.

Counterflow: The grand orchestral feel of Bernstein’s “Symphony #2, Age of Anxiety” is replicated through the great expanse and energy of the dancers and five floor-to-ceiling panels of fabric. By contrasting these powerful moments with a dichotomy of quiet and stillness, Counterflow creates vast illusions with the dancers appearing and disappearing among the fabric. The dancers manipulate the panels to create an endless, billowing and connected sense of movement that is juxtaposed against very serene moments of tranquility.

This evening’s concert will also feature Oh My…, a dance set to five selections from the engaging music of “Appalachia Waltz”. This album, from the trio of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, double-bassist and composer Edgar Meyer and fiddler and composer Mark O’Connor, features authentic folk tunes, new melodies and traditional music that allow the choreography to dive from playfulness, to grace, to cartoon, to dreams, to dancing in the clouds.

The Betrothed, a passionate and emotional duet from the full evening work From the mind of a single long vine, one hundred opening lives – will also be performed.
