Our workshops are designed for young people who love to write and who enjoy collaborating with other writers. All our workshops will run July 10-14, 2023 at the University at Albany campus. We offer half-day workshops across all grade levels and a full-day workshop for high school students.

A limited number of partial scholarships may be available.

WRITING LIKE AN ARTIST (Grades 1-4)

Participants will explore picture books and the different forms of art, such as illustration and photography, that are used to help tell the stories. Taking inspiration from a variety of other materials, participants will play with different ways to tell their own stories.

CREATE YOUR OWN WORLD (Grades 5-7)

What do The Hobbit, Harry Potter, and Minecraft have in common? They all involve fictionalized worlds with creative settings. Students will create a 3D model of their own unique world using play dough, cardboard, and other manipulatives. Students will then write a description of their world including characters, conflicts, and histories.

ORIGIN STORIES (Grades 7-9)

Origin stories describe where it all began. In your wildest dreams, how did your hometown get its name? Where did candy come from? Why do dogs bark? Writers will experiment with different origin subjects and styles. It’s time to create stories of creation!

DISCOVERING YOUR VOICE (Grades 10-12)

Find your voice and your community this summer! In this creative writing workshop, rising 10-12th graders will join a unique community of writers on the UAlbany campus. Young writers will visit multiple spaces on campus for inspiration as they explore multiple genres of writing. On each day of the workshop, acclaimed professional authors affiliated with the New York State Writers Institute will visit to give readings and engage in craft discussions. Gifted facilitators from the Capital District Writing Project will lead carefully designed writing exercises and provide prompts to help young writers find their voice and go on a journey of creative discovery. After a week of writing and individualized feedback, young writers will share their writing in a culminating celebratory showcase. This workshop is for highly motivated and creative high school students who are eager to develop their craft and to find their voice in a supportive writing community.
