NYS Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Art & Essay Exhibit - History in the making! Every year, the New York State Education Department partners with the Office of General Services to honor Dr. King’s memory by inviting schools to submit student art and essays that reflect Dr. King's teachings. Schools submitted original artwork illustrating Dr. King's Six Principles and Steps of Nonviolence or essays celebrating Dr. King's birthday.
Sojourner Truth: A New Yorker's Path from Slavery to Freedom - The Third Judicial District has overseen the design and production of a large four-panel poster display memorializing the life and legacy of Sojourner Truth. This exhibit is now on display in Ulster County Family Court, and it will travel throughout New York State. (On View: February 2 - 13)
Another Face of War, Enslaved and Free Blacks in the Revolution - Presented by NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
Rapp Road - The historic Rapp Road Community in the Pine Bush section of Albany. The community was settled during the Great Migration of millions of African Americans from the American South to the industrialized Northeast in the 1900s. The Rapp Road Historic District is a cluster of 23 homes built by African Americans who migrated predominantly from Shubuta, Mississippi between 1927 and 1963.
The Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany - The Underground Railroad was the movement enslaved African Americans, and their descendants used to gain freedom in the 19th century. In the years leading up to the Civil War, thousands of enslaved people sought freedom in New York State's Capital Region. The center interprets the Underground Railroad’s history and relevance today.
