Which Way Is Home

Which Way Is Home, a new work funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and written by Albany High School students, asks “What does it mean to become part of a new community—welcomed or not?” The play explores, from the perspective of Albany youth with diverse backgrounds and unique voices, the search for the meaning of ‘home.’ Their stories, images of their lives and flashes of the world around them intersect on stage under the direction of Capital Repertory Resident Teaching Artist Noelle Gentile, who says, “These young artists challenge the status quo of institutionalized racism and oppression by courageously sharing their journeys in search of a better home and a more just world.”

Which Way Is Home was created over a ten month period by Capital Repertory Theatre and The Albany High School Theatre Ensemble, in collaboration with Youth FX filmmakers; The Refugee Roundtable; Arts, Numbers and Letters; and the National Coalition Building Institute.

“Our long-standing partnership with Albany High School goes to the core of our mission,” says theREP’s Producing Artistic Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, “which is to ensure that every high school student experiences theatre before graduating.”

“As rewarding as it is for young people to attend theatre, there’s even greater joy in having thoughtful and powerful work created and performed by them as part of our Artist-in-Residency program. We are so proud to be able to sponsor and nurture this work, which truly has the capacity to change lives.”

Which Way Is Home is free and open to the public.
