Gemstone Mining at Howe

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 10/08/2016
Don't just visit the Howe Cavern: kids love a treasure hunt! Purchase a bag of mining rough, and make your way to the water sluice. A water sluice is a trough of running water where bags of mining "rough" are emptied and sifted through screen trays. The water washes away the dirt, revealing sparkling gems and minerals. Its like panning for gold! You will discover garnets, rose quartz, fool's gold, emeralds, aquamarines and many other beautiful stones and use the identification charts to accurately identify exactly what you have found. Try your hand at sifting for fossils or arrowheads too. And all the treasures you find are yours to take home!

Don't forget to explore underground with cool tours at affordable prices!

Each tour of Howe Caverns starts with a 156 ft descent below the earth's surface...

Your journey winds through limestone corridors, cavernous galleries, under massive boulders, to a subterranean riverbed carved over countless millennia. Deep in the cave, solid rock appears fluid: creating strange formations, flowing sheets and dripping stalactites. Mysterious grottos lead off into distant, unexplored passages. Shadows hide secrets in every crack and crevice. The path twists and turns ever downward to the glassy surface of an underground lake that trails off into the absolute darkness of the cave’s Eastern Terminus... this is the Howe Caverns experience.

Your specially-trained tour guide
will help you negotiate the cave and learn about the magnificent limestone formations, the stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone, and the tremendous conservation effort underway to protect and preserve Howe Caverns for future generations.
