In a world where the default forms of entertainment for children are primarily television, video games and the Internet, Opera Saratoga's Opera-to-Go program provides youth with an all-too-rare opportunity to experience the visceral thrill of the live performing arts, up close and personal!

Featuring the music of Offenbach, Rossini, Donizetti, and Verdi, John Davies has adapted The Bremen Town Musicians into delightful, forty-minute children's opera. The donkey, General Boom, seeks to form a band for the town of Bremen using the outcast farm animals as musicians. It doesn't take long for them to discover that they have to consider each other's feelings before they can make music. But, can the four very different creatures band together before pirates steal their instruments?
The story of four farm animals brought together by fate and traveling with each other is very much in the tradition of beloved "journey stories," including The Wizard of Oz, and the Toy Story movies. Journey Stories are about characters that are usually very different from each other and motivated by distinctly personal goals. They travel together, often reluctantly, but then successfully face obstacles that none of them would be able to overcome on their own. As the group moves from one challenge to another, the travelers come to appreciate the importance of putting their differences aside and working together.
Through this adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale, children will be exposed to a rich variety of operatic music while exploring the important themes of diversity and tolerance. Acceptance of others and the value of cooperation are themes that are interwoven throughout this year's Opera-to-Go performance.

These performances are appropriate for children in Pre-K to Grade 6.
 No reservations are necessary.
