Scientific researchers often talk about their result, but to gather the data they need, there are sometimes real challenges. Working in the Catskill Mountains is an example. While the bedrock is well exposed locally in places, vast areas are covered by glacial sediments, soils and forest. Large exposures are rare, and chiefly found in rugged and wild terrain. No one place or series of trails exposes the entire mile-plus thick “stack” of Devonian-age Catskill rocks. Dr. Ver Straeten has been trying to resolve multiple problems and, for the first time, systematically sample the Catskill rock stack from bottom to top. Come hear about challenges of geological fieldwork in the mountains of New York.

This program includes a 20-minute talk and Dr. Ver Straeten will be happy to answer any questions following the presentation. Participants are welcomed to bring their lunches.
