Albany Archaeology Field school

Join a team of professional archaeologists from Hartgen Archaeology Associates, Inc as they explore the The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence and surrounding Campus, as well as Thomas Elkins' Residence. Elkins was a 19th century dentist, abolitionist, inventor, and world traveler. The rchaeology feild school provides students the opportunity to learn the scientific techniques of archaeological excavation, artfact cataloging, site survey, and mounting exhibits. This five-day curriculum delves into the entire archaeological process from hypothesis buildng to dissemination of scientific results.
Highlights of the field school include:
- Working side by side with professional archeologists,
- Handling and researching actual historical artifacts,
- Site mapping using a total station and hand-held GPS units,
- Taking digital photography and learning how to prepare scaled-drawings,
- Collaborating with scholars from the New York State Museum and Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, (URHPCR)
- Working in the metric system,
- Developing and presenting an artifact exhibit to be displayed at the Ten Broeck Mansion
- Presenting the results at an open house at the conclusion of the field school
